PRIVATE DESERT TOUR — MARRAKECH & BACK
OVERVIEW
Four days from Marrakech into the Erg Chebbi Sahara desert and back — a private tour with a distinct and scenic route that takes in the High Atlas Mountains, the UNESCO Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, and Ouarzazate on the way south, then follows the legendary Draa Valley and the Nkob route to Rissani and Merzouga. The return journey through the Todra Gorges, Dades Valley, the Rose Valley, and the Amridil Kasbah brings you back to Marrakech on an entirely different road, making this a genuine loop of southern Morocco’s finest landscapes.

Early pick-up from your accommodation or airport in Marrakech. Drive south through the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi-N-Tichka pass with panoramic stops. Visit the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage fortified village that appeared in Gladiator, Alexander, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones. Continue to Ouarzazate — the “Gate of the Desert”. Dinner and overnight in a hotel.
After breakfast, explore Ouarzazate: visit the famous Atlas Studios where films like Gladiator and Lawrence of Arabia were shot, and the Taourirt Kasbah. Depart south through Agdez and along the Draa Valley — Morocco’s longest river — passing spectacular palmeries, ancient kasbahs, and Berber villages. Free time for lunch in Nkob or Alnif.
Continue through Rissani to reach the Merzouga Sahara desert. Switch to camels and cross the Erg Chebbi dunes, pausing on a high dune to watch the magical sunset. Continue to the luxury desert camp for a traditional Moroccan dinner, Berber drum music around the campfire, and a spectacular night beneath an open sky full of stars. Overnight in camp.
Rise early for the desert sunrise. After a warm Moroccan breakfast, return on camels or the camp’s 4×4 to Merzouga. Drive north to Rissani and Erfoud, where you visit one of the remarkable workshops producing sculptures from fossilised marble. Continue through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad to the Todra Gorges, where the river has carved a soaring red canyon through the mountains. Walk freely through the dramatic gorge. Free time for lunch. Continue west to the Dades Valley through Boumalne Dades, with stops at the extraordinary “monkey fingers” rock formations and a panoramic viewpoint over the gorge. Dinner and overnight in a hotel.
Continue west to Kelaat M’Gouna and the Rose Valley — where a festival is held every May celebrating the rose harvest, rose water production, perfumes, and cosmetics. Drive along various kasbahs to the beautiful Amridil Kasbah, surrounded by the great Skoura palm grove. Reach Ouarzazate for a free lunch stop, then cross the High Atlas via the Tizi-N-Tichka pass back to Marrakech. Drop-off at your accommodation or airport.
