Early pick-up from your accommodation or airport in Marrakech. Drive through the High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi-N-Tichka pass with panoramic stops. Visit the Telouet Kasbah — the once-grand palace of the Glaoui chieftains, a fascinating ruin of ornate rooms and carved plasterwork. Continue to the UNESCO Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — the great earthen fortress of Gladiator, Alexander, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones fame. Continue to Ouarzazate — Africa’s cinematic capital. Dinner and overnight in a hotel.
After breakfast, explore Ouarzazate: visit the Atlas Film Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah. Drive east through the great Skoura palm grove to the beautifully preserved Amridil Kasbah. Continue to the Rose Valley near Kelaat M’Gouna — famous for its annual May Rose Festival. Continue to the Dades Valley through Boumalne Dades, with stops at the dramatic “monkey fingers” rock formations and a panoramic gorge viewpoint. Dinner and overnight in a riad.
After breakfast, continue to the Todra Gorges near Tinghir — where the river has carved a soaring red canyon through the mountains. Walk freely through the gorge. Drive through palm groves for a lunch stop along the way. Arrive at the Merzouga Sahara desert in the afternoon. Switch to camels and cross the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, pausing on a high dune to watch the magical colours unfold. Arrive at the luxury desert camp for traditional dinner, Berber music, and a night beneath a blazing sky of stars. Overnight in camp.
Rise early for the desert sunrise. After breakfast, return by camel to Merzouga. Spend the full day exploring the Merzouga region by 4×4. Visit an ancient eyeliner mine, nomadic families in their handmade tents (Berber tea), and the Khamlia village where Gnaoua musicians descended from sub-Saharan Africa (Mali, Sudan, Niger) perform their hypnotic music. Free lunch, palm grove stroll, and the wild flamingo lake. Dinner and overnight in a hotel.
Drive north. Rissani traditional souk. Erfoud fossil marble workshop. Panoramic Ziz Valley viewpoint. Lunch in Midelt. Cedar forests near Azrou (Barbary macaques). Alpine Ifrane. Arrive Fes and overnight in a riad.
A full day in Fes el-Bali with a specialist local guide. Driving tour: Royal Palace Gate, the Jewish Mellah, Borj Sud fortress viewpoint, Ceramic Village. Walking tour of the medieval medina: the Al-Attarine Madrasa, the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque and University (the world’s oldest continuously operating university), the Chouara Tanneries viewed from above the vivid dye vats, and the vibrant craft and spice souks. Overnight in a riad.
After breakfast, drive to Meknes — the Ismaili imperial capital. Visit Bab al-Mansour, the Sahrij Souani reservoir, the royal stables, the granaries, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Continue 30 kilometres to the UNESCO Roman ruins of Volubilis — remarkable preserved mosaics, triumphal arch, and ancient columns on a hilltop above the Meknes plain. Drive north through Ouazzane to Chefchaouen in the Rif Mountains — the famous Blue City, its medina of cobalt-painted alleyways and arched doorways. Overnight in a hotel.
After breakfast, enjoy a free morning to stroll the blue alleyways of Chefchaouen before the drive to Tangier airport, port, or hotel. Tour ends.
