5 DAYS DESERT TOUR FROM MARRAKECH TO MERZOUGA

    0
PRIVATE DESERT TOUR — MARRAKECH & BACK
    OVERVIEW

Five days from Marrakech into the Erg Chebbi Sahara desert and back — the most comfortable and complete version of the Merzouga round trip from Marrakech. This private tour takes a scenic northern route over the High Atlas, visiting the Telouet Kasbah before the UNESCO Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah and Ouarzazate. A dedicated full day in the desert allows time to explore Merzouga’s extraordinary landscape by 4×4 — nomadic communities, the Khamlia Gnaoua village, the wild flamingo lake, and the palm groves. The return route follows the Dades Valley, the Todra Gorges, the Rose Valley, and the beautiful Amridil Kasbah back to Marrakech.

Every element is private, tailored, and delivered by a dedicated driver/guide throughout.

    ITINERARY

DAY 1: MARRAKECH → TELOUET KASBAH → AIT BEN HADDOU → OUARZAZATE

Early pick-up from your accommodation or airport in Marrakech. Drive south through the High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi-N-Tichka pass, with panoramic stops along the route. Visit the Telouet Kasbah — the once-grand palace of the powerful Glaoui chieftains, a fascinating ruin of elaborately decorated rooms and carved plaster that speaks of a vanished era of southern Moroccan power. Continue through the Ounila Valley to the UNESCO Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou — a magnificent earthen fortress that appeared in Gladiator, Alexander, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones. Continue to Ouarzazate for dinner and overnight.

DAY 2: OUARZAZATE → DADES VALLEY

After breakfast, explore Ouarzazate: visit the Taourirt Kasbah and the famous Atlas Film Studios where iconic productions were filmed. Drive east along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Draa Valley and the Rose Valley to reach the Dades Valley. Overnight at a hotel or riad with views of the dramatic gorge landscape.

DAY 3: DADES VALLEY → TODRA GORGES → MERZOUGA → CAMEL TREK → LUXURY CAMP

After breakfast, drive through the spectacular Dades Valley with stops to admire the canyon formations. Continue east to the Todra Gorges near Tinghir, where the river has carved a soaring red-walled canyon through the mountains. Wander freely through the gorge. Continue through the palm groves to reach Merzouga in the afternoon. Switch to camels and cross the Erg Chebbi dunes at sunset, pausing on a high dune to watch the magical colours unfold over the Sahara. Arrive at the luxury desert camp for a traditional Moroccan dinner, Berber music around the campfire, and a night beneath an open sky blazing with stars.

DAY 4: EXPLORE MERZOUGA DESERT — NOMADS, KHAMLIA, FLAMINGO LAKE, PALM GROVE

Rise early for the desert sunrise. After breakfast, return by camel to Merzouga. Spend the entire day exploring the remarkable Merzouga region by 4×4. Begin with an off-road drive to an ancient eyeliner mine. Visit nomadic families in their handmade woven tents — share Berber tea and learn about traditional desert life. Continue to the village of Khamlia, where the Gnaoua music and dance of a community descended from sub-Saharan Africa (Mali, Sudan, and Niger) creates an unforgettable cultural encounter. Free time for lunch at a local restaurant. Stroll through a date palm grove, then drive to the wild Merzouga lake — also known as the flamingo lake — a seasonal oasis where flamingos and migratory birds gather. Dinner and overnight in Merzouga.

DAY 5: MERZOUGA → DRAA VALLEY → AMRIDIL KASBAH → HIGH ATLAS → MARRAKECH

After the desert sunrise, depart west and south via Rissani. Follow the ancient Draa Valley through its spectacular palmeries and ancient kasbahs. Visit the beautifully preserved Amridil Kasbah in the Skoura palm grove — one of Morocco’s finest examples of southern fortress architecture. Continue through Ouarzazate for a lunch stop, then cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi-N-Tichka pass and descend into Marrakech. Drop-off at your accommodation or airport.
