Todra Gorge is Morocco’s most dramatic natural landmark — a narrow slot canyon carved by the Todra River through the High Atlas limestone, where sheer walls rise three hundred metres on either side of a passage barely ten metres wide at its narrowest point. Located near the town of Tinghir in the Draa-Tafilalet region, Todra Gorge occupies an almost perfect position on the route between Merzouga and the Marrakech-Fes highway, making it a natural and essential stop on virtually every Morocco desert tour itinerary. Nothing quite prepares first-time visitors for the scale of what the canyon reveals.
The Geology of Todra Gorge
The Todra River has been cutting through the limestone plateau of the High Atlas foothills for millions of years, creating one of the most spectacular examples of river canyon formation in North Africa. At the gorge’s deepest section, the canyon narrows so dramatically that direct sunlight reaches the river for only a few hours each day, concentrated into a shaft of brilliant light that illuminates the ochre and cream limestone walls with extraordinary intensity. The Todra River itself runs year-round, fed by Atlas snowmelt, and remains cold and clear even in the height of summer.
Activities at Todra Gorge
The Canyon Walk
The standard gorge walk follows the river through the narrowest section — approximately 1.5 kilometres of entirely flat terrain accessible to all fitness levels. The deepest and most dramatic section of the canyon is within the first 300 metres from the car park, making this accessible even on tours with limited time. A full one-way walk of 4 kilometres brings visitors to the upper canyon with its Berber villages and terraced gardens.
Rock Climbing
Todra Gorge is one of Africa’s premier rock climbing destinations, with over 150 documented routes on the limestone walls ranging from grades suitable for beginners to highly technical expert challenges. A professional climbing guide infrastructure has developed around the gorge, and equipment hire is available in the village at the canyon entrance.
When to Visit Todra Gorge
The light shaft effect is at its most dramatic between 9am and 11am, when direct sunlight penetrates the narrowest section of the canyon. Early morning visits also avoid the midday tourist crowds. The gorge can be cold in the shade in winter — a light jacket is advisable even in summer. All our extended desert tours include Todra Gorge as a dedicated stop. See our Tours from Marrakech and 5-Day Morocco Tour from Casablanca to Marrakech for itineraries that include a full gorge experience.
