The Atlas Film Studios complex covers approximately 30,000 square metres and is the largest film studio in the world by land area. Productions filmed here include Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, The Last Temptation of Christ, Kundun, Alexander, The Mummy, Babel, American Sniper, and numerous seasons of Game of Thrones. Visitors can tour the standing sets — including a recreation of ancient Alexandria and an Egyptian temple complex — and inspect an extraordinary collection of props, costumes, and production equipment. The studio tour takes approximately 90 minutes and provides a genuinely unusual and entertaining perspective on the region’s international cultural influence.
Taourirt Kasbah: Ouarzazate’s Ancient Heart
The Taourirt Kasbah in Ouarzazate’s city centre is a restored 19th-century earthen fortress that served as the primary residence of the Glaoui family — the most powerful pre-independence dynasty in southern Morocco. UNESCO restoration work has preserved the kasbah’s elaborate interior reception halls, decorated with carved cedar wood ceilings and intricate zellij tilework. The kasbah occupies the centre of a still-functioning traditional neighbourhood where several families continue to live in adjacent earthen houses.
