Merzouga Desert Camp Guide: Sleeping Under the Saharan Stars

An overnight stay in a Merzouga desert camp at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes is the experience that defines Morocco for most international visitors — and it consistently delivers more than travellers expect. The combination of total darkness unpolluted by artificial light, the silence of the Saharan night broken only by wind across the sand and occasional music from the camp, the cold desert air against skin warm from the campfire, and a sky so dense with stars that the Milky Way casts shadows — this cluster of sensations is genuinely unlike anything available in the developed world.

Types of Merzouga Desert Camps

Standard Traditional Camps

Standard camps use traditional Berber-style tents with shared bathroom facilities, quality mattresses, wool blankets, and a communal dining area. The atmosphere is authentic and the experience is complete — the standard of facilities is comfortably adequate, and the setting within the dune field is identical to that of luxury camps. Most of our group tour packages include this category.

Luxury Desert Camps

Luxury camps offer private ensuite tents with real beds and quality linen, private bathrooms with hot showers, electricity for device charging, individual furnished terraces with views across the dune crests, and gourmet Moroccan dining from a trained camp chef. Some luxury camps include small plunge pools, hammam facilities, and private stargazing sessions with telescopes. Our luxury tours page covers all premium desert camp options.

The Desert Camp Evening Experience

The sequence of a desert camp evening typically runs: camel arrival at sunset, welcome mint tea, exploration of the surrounding dunes, dinner served in the communal tent or at individual tables, Gnawa music performance around the fire, and then the extraordinary transition from firelight to starlight as the fire dies down. The Sahara’s sky on a moonless night contains approximately 4,000 visible stars — compared to around 200 in a typical European city — and the experience of lying in the sand watching this sky is one of the most commonly cited highlights of travellers’ entire Morocco journeys.

All our desert tours from Marrakech and Fes include overnight camp accommodation at Erg Chebbi. Our 8-Day Essential Morocco Tour from Marrakech provides a three-day camp experience, while our 5-Day Desert Tour from Marrakech to Fes gives guests a full day to explore the dunes before the overnight.
